Awarded One Chefs Hat Age Good Food Guide 2008 - Abla’s restaurant in Carlton is one of the best places in Melbourne for classic Lebanese food. It’s a long-running success because of the great flavours and genuine hospitality.

Abla’s opened in 1979, when Carlton was much less trendy and BYO was the norm. It’s one of Melbourne’s favourite eating places because this two level restaurant is comfortable rather than designer-chic, and because the food is so reliably good. The years have passed but it’s still a family-owned and run establishment, and the cooking style is as it has always been – classic Lebanese food in an atmosphere of warmth. Bring your best appetite along. This is not food for those who are fussy or want only to pick at an entree. To get the best from Abla’s, go with a few friends and arrive hungry, then share what comes.

Begin with hummus (with tahini and lemon), little silverbeet rolls filled with rice and chickpeas, broad bean salad and delicious baked chicken wings. Other good tasters are labna (thick yoghurt), babaganoush, tabouli and ladies’ fingers (the little cigar-shaped pastries filled with spiced minced lamb). The chicken and rice is a speciality, but you really can’t go wrong no matter what you choose. If you’re really keen on the cuisine you can buy Abla Amad’s book and try preparing some of the dishes at home, although they always taste so good here you’ll still want to come back. After nearly 30 years you can still bring your own, or make use of the liquor licence. The only problem with a place that’s been around this long is that everyone knows about it, so be sure to book well in advance for weekends.
