Placed on the curve of the picturesque Peppermint Bay, only 30 minutes south of Hobart, this restaurant is even sweeter than it sounds. The tall windows are as refreshing as a Pimms and dry; which, incidentally, you can sip on while you ruminate over the tranquil view. However the wine list deserves your attention too, offering Tasmanian gems like a crisp Meadowbank Sauvignon Blanc and the terribly indulgent magnum of Pinot Noir from Coal River.
It’s easy to see why Peppermint Bay was applauded in the 2005 Tourism Awards. The menu reads like a guidebook, showcasing Tasmania’s standout food regions: oysters from Bruny Island, mayonnaise scattered with native pepper berries, and the pungent Tasmanian saffron. The menu changes with the seasons, but some dishes, like the spring lamb rack with slow cooked leg served with spinach and fetta pie and an egg and lemon sauce, should be a constant fixture. The only thing the menu lacks is pretension, although there could be more vegetarian options. The dessert menu couldn’t be sweeter, with offerings like Lark Distillery gin sorbet with a juniper and gingerbread man. Not quite a dessert for the kids, but pleasing nonetheless.
